USACE Galveston District awards $2.35 million contract
to dredge Corpus Christi, Houston/Galveston entrance channels
GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract in the amount of $2,351,700 to Manson Construction Co. for maintenance dredging of the Corpus Christi and Houston/Galveston entrance channels.
The contractor will perform the work with the trailing suction hopper dredge “Bayport” in the Houston/Galveston Entrance Channel for approximately 25 days and in the Corpus Christi Entrance Channel for three days.
“The USACE Galveston District plays a key role in America’s well-being by keeping waterways open for navigation and commerce,” said Navigation Branch Chief Christopher Frabotta, USACE Galveston District. “The Houston/Galveston Entrance Channel provides deep water navigation from the Gulf of Mexico to the ports of Houston, Texas City and Galveston (ranked 2nd, 10th and 41st in domestic and foreign tonnage respectively). The Corpus Christi Entrance Channel provides deep water navigation from the Gulf of Mexico to the Port of Corpus Christi (ranked 6th in domestic and foreign tonnage).”
Work is expected to begin in the Houston/Galveston Entrance Channel on Oct. 7, 2012. Once maintenance dredging is complete within the Houston/Galveston Entrance Channel, the dredge will sail to the Corpus Christi Entrance Channel and begin work in the early November timeframe.
The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
