Eco-Center Now Accepting Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Safe and Environmentally-Friendly Bulb Disposal

GALVESTON, Texas  – The City of Galveston’s Eco-Center is now accepting fluorescent light bulbs. Fluorescent light bulbs are extremely energy efficient and last longer than standard light bulbs but have one major drawback: proper disposal when the bulb has burned out. Fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury and sodium and should not be disposed of with your regular household waste.

The Eco-Center now has the ability to safely dispose of fluorescent light bulbs in an environmentally-friendly way. Beginning October 15, 2012, the Eco-Center will begin accepting the following types of fluorescent light bulbs:

  • Standard Fluorescent Bulbs up to 48” in length
  • Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)
  • U-Shaped Bulbs

Unfortunately, the Eco-Center cannot accept broken bulbs. All bulbs must be complete and unbroken. Please do not use the after-hours drop off location to recycle your fluorescent bulbs as

they are easily broken. Broken bulbs present a danger to you, city personnel and the environment.

The Eco-Center is located at 702 61st Street in Galveston. All bulbs must be dropped off during normal business hours, 8 AM to 4:45 PM, Monday through Saturday.

For additional information, please contact the City of Galveston Eco-Center at (409) 741-1446 or online at www.cityofgalveston.org.
