Port of Galveston Celebrates Major Milestone
5 Millionth Cruise Passenger
GALVESTON, TX -- On September 20th, the Port of Galveston celebrated a major milestone as the 5 millionth cruise passenger sailed on a cruise from Texas’ Star Cruise Port.
“The cruise business is good not only for Galveston, but for the entire state of Texas. Our goal is not only for passengers to have a pleasant experience sailing from our port but also to have cruise passengers spend some time on the island to discover the many other attractions that Galveston has to offer.”, said Mike Mierzwa, Port Director.
The Port of Galveston ranks 5th in the United States for passenger embarkations while Texas ranks 4th in the nation for cruise industry expenditures according to newly released 2011 data compiled by ,CLIA the world´s largest cruise association.
In 2011, the Port of Galveston’s 920,615 revenue passengers generated more than $23 million in annual business revenue, $917 million in income for Texas workers while creating 17,316 jobs.
The Port of Galveston, Texas’ Star Cruise Port serves as the primary point of embarkation for cruises to the western Caribbean and the Bahamas handles over 900,000 cruise passengers annually with an estimated 1million in 2012. Four cruise lines, Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean, sail from Texas’ only cruise port.
