VARNER-HOGG PLANTATION STATE HISTORIC SITE CELEBRATES THE SEASON
WITH HARVEST FESTIVAL

WEST COLUMBIA, Texas –– Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site celebrates its annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 27nd from 5 to 8 pm.

“Varner-Hogg’s annual Harvest Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the season. This year we are thrilled to have Texas-renowned Livery expert Chapman Traylor bringing his hands-on livestock program to the Festival, “ said Chris Elliott, Site Director.

Guests can hop on a fun-filled hayride through the historic site, tour the barn to see tools and wagons used during harvests of the 1800s, take pictures with one of the site’s scarecrows, enjoy crafts, refreshments, and storytelling and experience what it was like to fill a cotton sack and take it to market.

The Harvest Festival will also feature a sugar milling demonstration in the barn with a detailed description of the sugar making process used on the plantation during the 1800s. Visitors can also then stroll down to the garden to see sugar cane growing, learn how it’s harvested, and even taste a sample.

Farm animals similar to those raised on the site throughout its history will be available as well to teach visitors of all ages about the role of livestock in the harvest cycle.

Admission into the event is $3 per person, with free admittance for children under 5 years of age.  Parking will be outside of the site’s gates, along FM 2852/N. 13th St.  Come and experience the fun and excitement of the harvest season at Varner-Hogg!

Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, was founded in 1824 by one of Texas’ first colonizers, Martin Varner, and was later home to the Patton family and finally a second home to Texas Gov. James S. Hogg. The site tells the real stories of the transition from family to family, and traces the role slavery played in the building and economics of the plantation. Site features include an antebellum mansion with period furnishings, remains of a sugar mill, family cemetery and a barn. For more information visit www.visitvhp.com.
