$4 Million Moody Park Community Center Renovation Project To Begin November 2012
Project Funded by Current Park Bond Dollars and Community Development Block Grant
A $4 million dollar renovation project for the Moody Park Community Center will be announced during the Moody Park Fall Fiesta on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 3725 Fulton, Houston, TX, 77009. Funded through current park bond funds and a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant, the project will focus on the renovation and expansion of the community center. The Moody Park Fall Fiesta is scheduled from 11am to 2pm with a ceremony scheduled for 1pm.
"Moody Park is one of our most utilized parks,” said Mayor Annise Parker. “These improvements to the community center will provide an updated and more user-friendly facility for all of the neighborhood events that occur there. We are especially happy that we were able to combine funding from a Community Development Block Grant to make this possible."
It has been over twenty years since the Moody Park Community Center was built. The project will upgrade the existing structure while building for the future.
"This phase of the renovation will focus on the Community Center. The upgrades will create a wonderful building that will increase the services provided for the neighborhood," said Joe Turner, Director, Houston Parks and Recreation Department. "When the new METRORail line and the park renovations are completed, we expect visitors to see Moody Park as a destination park with convenient access to downtown Houston."
Moody Park was acquired in 1925 when the City of Houston bought all or parts of 120 residential lots for $18,000. The current 12,400 square foot Moody Park Community Center was built in 1986.
During the renovation process, the Community Center size will increase by 7,000 square feet to create a total 19,400 square foot center, complete with many modern amenities. This includes a new entry lobby, a classroom and large meeting room with a serving area, support spaces and restrooms. An outdoor courtyard will be created for the center and unique paving patterns will be used to tie the outdoor and indoor spaces together. Additional renovation improvements will include a new roof, new mechanical systems, new plumbing, new lighting, painting and structural repairs. Restrooms, weight room, classroom, gym and offices will be upgraded and the low ceilings will be removed in the weight room and classroom spaces. Furniture, appliances and weight equipment will be provided.
Exterior renovations include new sidewalks, landscape and irrigation near the building, lighting, seat walls and covered shade structures over the new courtyard and a covered walkway along the building near the parking lot. Improvements to the playground will be addressed in a future phase.
LEED certification will be sought for this project. Notice to proceed will be issued in November 2012 and substantial completion is expected in November 2013. Times Construction, Inc., is the General Contractor. Clark Condon Associates is the design consultant for the project along with Rey de la Reza Architects. The General Services Department will manage the design and construction of the Moody Park Community Center project for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
