Port of Beaumont Board of Commissioners
by Garrett Bryce
Monday, August 26, 2013

The Port of Beaumont Board of Commissioners today voted 3-2, with Lee Smith and Georgine Guillory opposed, to appoint William C. “Bill” Darling to the vacant Ward 1 seat on the commission.

Darling will take his oath of office for the position in September, according to Port Director & CEO David Chris Fisher.   Darling was one of nine candidates interviewed for the position in an August 19 meeting.

“There were just a number of very qualified candidates,” Fisher said.   “It was really difficult for everybody to like the same candidate equally.”

Other candidates included John C. Adams, Jr., Sheri Arnold, Arthur Earl Berry, Alfred Markham “Mark” Faggard, Willie H. Haley, Harley Kessinger, Clyde P. Richmond and Earl White.

The board voted unanimously to adopt the port’s FY2014 Budget.  The budget projects total revenues of approximately $11.44 million, with expenditures of $7.03 million for maintenance and operations and $1.85 million for payment on the port’s revenue bonds.  The remaining $2.5 million will be placed in the port’s surplus fund for future capital projects, according to Fisher.

The board voted unanimously to approve a 2013 tax rate of $0.0692 per $100 valuation.  The rate reflects a decrease of approximately 1.5 percent compared to the 2012 tax rate of $0.0708 per $100 valuation.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote.  All members were present. Agenda
