Port of Beaumont Board of Commissioners
by Garrett Bryce
Monday, October 28, 2013

The Port Beaumont Board of Commissioners today voted unanimously to cast the port’s 63 ballots for Miriam Johnson to be re-elected to the Jefferson County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

The county’s taxing entities each receive a number of ballots based on the percentage of the overall tax levy in the county that entity collects. The board consists of five members, plus the county’s tax assessor-collector as an ex-officio member.

The board voted to participate in the funding of the Big Thicket Association’s Neches River Adventures and Educational Programs by providing $10,000 toward the program. The Big Thicket Association provides boat tours for schools and the public along the Neches River.

The board voted to engage the firm of Darrick Eugene & Associates for legal counsel to assist in the implementation of a Transportation Reinvestment Zone.

The board voted to schedule a special meeting for November 11 at 10 a.m. to consider moving forward with the creation of the zone. If approved at that time, the board will hold a public hearing regarding the zone during its November 25 regular meeting, and consider adoption of an order to create the zone on December 30.

The board voted to approve a change order to a contract with Trans Global Solutions, Inc. for the Orange County Rail Access – Yard Automation Project.

The change order reduces the amount of the contract by $275,000, decreasing the total contract cost from $569,760 to $294,760.

"That, along with Union Pacific completing the automated turn out off the main line in the first half of November should complete our rail access projects for the Orange County Terminal," Port Director and CEO Chris Fisher said.  Listen (4:53)
