The United States Naval Ship Mendonca was unloaded this week at the Port of Beaumont by Beaumont-based Soldiers from the 842nd Transportation Battalion.

The Mendonca, the Navy's largest roll-on/roll-off ship, passed under Port Arthur's MLK Bridge, which is 136 feet above the river, clearing the overhead roadway by only four feet as it made the 40 mile trek inland to Beaumont's deep-water port. Once at the port, three tugs pushed and pulled the 900 foot vessel 180 degrees in the opposite direction before it was finally tied up dockside.

Following the docking, the soldiers began offloading more than 1,650 pieces of equipment comprised of vehicles, trailers, helicopters and other rolling stock from the Hawaii based 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division.

Lieutenant Colonel Darrin Bowser, Commander of the 842nd Transportation Battalion, talked to reporters on the dock.  Listen (6:05)

United States Coast Guard Commander Richard Scott talked about escorting the MENDONCA up the Sabine-Neches Waterway. Listen (1:08)

The Port of Beaumont is the fourth busiest port in the United States in terms of tonnage processed, and the busiest military port in the world for processing U.S. military equipment.  The Port of Beaumont serves as headquarters to the U.S. Army's 842nd Transportation Battalion.
