Juneteenth organizers invite public to participate in promotional video
Video will be shot at Courville Stadium in Galveston on Sunday, April 26 at 4 p.m.

GALVESTON, Texas – The organizers of the 150th Anniversary Juneteenth celebrations in Galveston, Texas invite the public to join them in shooting a video to promote the historical event that freed slaves in the South following the U.S. Civil War. The video will be recorded on Sunday, April 26 at 4 p.m. at Kermit Courville Stadium. Those interested in being in the video should enter in the gates located at the corner of 27th Street and M Ave. across from the Old Central Cultural Center.

“The goal is to have as many people together as one to promote Juneteenth, the meaning behind this historically significant date, and the many fun, educational activities associated with the 150th anniversary this year,” said Sam Collins III, one of the main organizers of Juneteenth in Galveston.

The video will not take longer than an hour to film. Those who have a Juneteenth 150th Anniversary t-shirt are asked to wear them to the recording. Those without Juneteenth shirts are encouraged to wear white shirts to match.

According to, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19 as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.
