GHF Historic Customs House Sold to DSW Homes

Thursday, May 14, 2015

Galveston Historical Foundation has closed on the sale of the 1861 Customs House, which now houses GHF’s offices.

“The terms of the sale are confidential, agreed to by both parties” said GHF Executive Director Dwayne Jones, confirming the sale.  “We have sold it.  The new occupants of the property will be DSW Homes.”

"First let me say that DSW Homes is so very honored and proud to be part of such a historic and amazing community as Galveston and to be blessed with the opportunity to call such a beautiful historic treasure our New National Corporate Headquarters is a dream come true," said Steve Mataro of DSW Homes. For over five years DSW has specialized in helping to restore many of the Historic homes damaged by the storms, each and everyone was a labor of love to help preserve the magic of the past. This wonderful historic landmark and DSW coming together have both made a statement of our commitment, respect and love for this community we call home."

“We’re pleased and excited and happy it gets a new use,” Jones said.  “We’ll move on to some of the things we want to do, ultimately moving most of our headquarters back to the Strand.”

To facilitate the transfer of ownership, GHF staff offices and equipment are currently being moved from the Custom House to the new GHF 1940 Sears Building at 23rd Street and Broadway.
