Harris County Residents Urged to Monitor Tropical Weather

What is the danger?

Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) is urging residents to monitor tropical weather this week. According to the National Weather Service, a low pressure system in the Yucatan Peninsula is expected to move across the Gulf and potentially impact the Texas coast. If a tropical system develops, the primary threat to our region would be tropical storm winds, heavy rainfall and flooding along the coast.

Residents should also monitor the forecast for a second system that is moving into the southern Caribbean. This system has a 90 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm in the next two days.

What you need to do:

Harris County residents should closely monitor these systems for the next several days. All residents of the Texas Gulf Coast should have a plan for tropical weather. If you live in an evacuation zone and will need assistance evacuating, please call 2-1-1 and register today.

Whether you are in an evacuation zone or you just need to be able to ride out the storm, HCOHSEM has resources to help you be ready for anything. Click here to get all-hazard preparedness information and sign up for alerts at

HCOHSEM's ReadyHarris mobile app puts the power to build a personalized preparedness plan in the palm of your hand. The free app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
