Memorial Hermann’s Fourth of July Safety Tips to Keep You Out of the Emergency Room

HOUSTON  – The Fourth of July often comes with the joys of fireworks, barbecues and outdoor activities. It’s these very same activities however, that can make the holiday a dangerous one for many.

According to the National Safety Council, Independence Day is one of the most dangerous holiday weekends of the year.Emergency medicine physicians affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Red Duke Trauma Institute  and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital want to remind everyone to play it safe this holiday weekend.

Tips for using fireworks more safely:

·         Follow local laws

·         Do not allow young people to play with fireworks

·         Adults should supervise older children using fireworks at all times

·         Never have any portion of your body directly over a firework while lighting

·         Keep a bucket of water or connected garden hose nearby for emergencies

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) also reminds people to be safe when grilling. According to the NFPA, 16,600 people went to emergency centers nationwide in 2014 because of injuries involving grills; half of those injuries were burns.  The NFPA recommends grilling in a well-ventilated area and using long-handled utensils over a grill. In the event of a fire – small or large – it’s also important to keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

Memorial Hermann would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy Fourth of July.
