Houston City Council today voted unanimously to appoint Stephen “Steve” Wright as the director of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Listen (22:21)

Wright comes from the YMCA of Greater Houston, where he held two executive positions. He succeeds the recently retired Joe Turner.

Mayor Sylvester Turner said Wright’s leadership experience and enthusiasm impressed him.

Wright said he was “honored, humbled, and privileged” by the appointment.

The city council voted unanimously to confirm the mayor’s appointment of Mary E. Lentschke and reappointment of Anthony Graves, Francisco G. Medina, and Robert H. McPherson to the Houston Forensic Science Center, Inc. Board of Directors.

The city council voted unanimously to award a professional services contract to the Houston Center for Literacy for professional literacy services.

The city council voted unanimously to enter into an agreement with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP for professional services for the Houston Airport System.

The city council voted unanimously to amend Section 8-17 of the Code of Ordinances relating to the Automotive Board.

Mike Laster tagged an item approving an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for reimbursement costs to the city for mowing and litter cleanup within certain state highway underpasses.

All other agenda items were approved unanimously with Ellen Cohen and Jerry Davis absent. Agenda
