Galveston-Houston Bus Connection Delayed
by Garrett Bryce
Friday, July 07, 2017

The City of Galveston has announced that, due to changes made to an agreement with the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, the launch of the Island Express service connecting Galveston to Houston has been delayed.

“Due to changes made to the intergovernmental agreement that was approved by Metro, the Island Express service will not be able to begin on July 10,” said a statement issued by the City of Galveston. “Staff will be placing the revised agreement on the council agenda for the July 27th meeting. Pending council approval, the service could begin sometime in August.”

Galveston City Council had approved an agreement. However, when the Houston METRO Board of Directors considered the agreement on June 22, it was approved with an amendment concerning the costs of signage related to the service.

Under the agreement, Galveston's Island Express service would connect with the existing METRO service at the Bay Area Park & Ride facility, with one transfer to downtown Houston.

The service includes three proposed weekday times, one morning, one midday, and one afternoon trip. It would also allow for reverse commute trips from Houston to Galveston.
