Board of Pilot Commissioners for Brazoria County
by Garrett Bryce
Tuesday, July 11, 2017

The Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Ports of Brazoria County on Monday voted unanimously to issue a final order regarding requests by the Brazos Pilots Association for adjustments to pilotage rates for Port Freeport.

The association had made three requests.

The first request was for a 3 percent upward adjustment across the board each year for the next 3 years. The request was modified to a 2 percent rate increase for one year commencing 10 days from the date of the order, and to review the matter again in 12 months with more financials.

The second request was for a $200/vessel movement line-item surcharge fee for the purchase of two new pilot boats. That item was modified to have staff provide information for purchasing the vessel identified by the pilots to lease back to the association for their usage with no rate increase.

The third request, which was for a $300/vessel movement line item surcharge for the establishment and maintenance of a 24-hour, 7-days a week dispatch and port information service was denied. The board will work with the association to develop a plan within a year to accomplish the dispatch service.

The final order was issued following a public hearing and deliberation on the matter. Final Order
