State of Texas
Texas State Representative Ron Reynolds
News Release
Monday, July 24, 2017

As I stand with my Democratic Colleagues during the Special Session we are focused on the important issues that Texans actually care about; our economy, our children and schools, our neighborhoods and community, and access to affordable healthcare for our families. I will continue to fight against the controversial and misplaced priorities that our Governor and Lt. Governor are currently proposing.

I have filed HB 255 to provide for a much needed pay raise for our teachers, full-time librarians and full-time counselors. Our kids and our state deserve the most talented, dedicated teachers and para professionals available who can stay and thrive in the profession, and they deserve our respect and fair pay. Great teachers are vital for our kids and our communities, but we are losing them because we don't pay them like the professionals we ask them to be.

Our school teachers and para professionals help shape the future of our children every day and we need to show them how much we value their responsibilities. Every year they have to pay more of their healthcare costs, so they bring home less money every month. We have great qualified teachers leaving the profession every year due to low salaries, and that is unacceptable. Annual pay for teachers has fallen sharply over the past 60 years in relation to the annual pay of other workers with college degrees. Throughout the nation the average earnings of workers with at least four years of college are now over 50 percent higher than the average earnings of a teacher.

I call on my colleagues to join me in supporting our teachers, librarians and counselors, and to work with me to pass HB 255 and provide a meaningful pay raise that is well overdue.

Ron Reynolds represents Texas House District 27, which encompasses communities of Fort Bend County. Representative Reynolds currently serves as a member of the House Committees on Elections and Environmental Regulations.
