COM coordinator named to international emergency manager commission

Trish McIntosh, College of the Mainland emergency management coordinator, has been invited to serve on the International Association of Emergency Managers Certification Commission starting in 2018. She is a certified emergency manager and she will represent campus professionals on the board. 

“Ms. McIntosh is a staunch advocate for the emergency management profession, leading the development of our own Associate of Applied Science degree in emergency management,” said COM president Warren Nichols. “She also facilitated the development of a 2+2 articulation agreement, which will allow our students to seamlessly transfer directly into a Bachelor of Science program in homeland security and emergency management at Texas Southern University.”

The Certified Emergency Managers Commission is comprised of 18 professionals reflecting the entire spectrum of emergency management, including government, health care, private sector, military, academia and campus personnel. The board reviews those applying to be certified emergency managers and those renewing their credentials. 

The certified emergency manager designation is an internationally recognized credential. It ensures that professionals have the knowledge and skills required to be competitive and serve their communities.

McIntosh will attend training in Virginia in September and will be officially seated as a commissioner in January for a three-year term. Certified emergency manager commissioners must be nominated and meet rigorous education and experience qualifications.  

The COM Emergency Management Program prepares individuals as entry-level emergency management specialists to coordinate disaster response, develop and deliver emergency preparedness training, and prepare plans for all hazards. The program offers two certificates and an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Industry professionals teach courses, and a diverse board of advisors who work in emergency management at nonprofit, public and private organizations guide the program.
