City Lowers Speed Limit to A Consistent 35 mph from 6th Street to 61st Street to Increase Driver & Pedestrian Safety

Galveston, TX – As the City works toward making Galveston a more walkable community, City Council unanimously approved at its July 27th meeting a reduction in  the speed limit on Seawall Blvd to a consistent 35mph from 6th Street to 61st Street.

After conducting an internal traffic study, as well as taking into consideration findings from a pedestrian safety study conducted by the Goodman Corporation, staff requested the change in response to findings from both. Historically, the posted speed limit from 6th to east of 39th Street has been 35mph, while the speed limit west of 39th Street to 61st was posted at 40mph. This decision makes the speed uniform from 6th to 61st, in hopes of alleviating any confusion for drivers.

“Galveston is so fortunate to have such a beautiful stretch of roadway in our City,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “That being said, it also provides numerous distractions for drivers taking in the sights. This reduction in speed is just one step we are making toward making our City safer for pedestrians and drivers alike.”

City crews have already completed placing new signage to reflect the change, as well as signage providing advance notice to drivers.

Information to Note:

·         The Seawall Blvd. speed limit has been lowered to 35mph from west of 39th Street through to 61st Street.

·         Speed limit signs have been updated throughout. Advanced warning signs for reduction in speed have been placed for drivers heading east on Seawall from 61st.

·         The stretch of Seawall Blvd west of 6th Street and east of 61st is under the jurisdiction of the City. Areas of Seawall Blvd. east of 6th Street and west of 61st remain under the control of TxDOT.
