La Marque City Council

Tuesday, August 08, 2017

La Marque City Council, in a special meeting on Monday, voted unanimously to call public hearings for August 14 and August 29 to receive comments regarding the proposed property tax rate for the 2017 Tax Year.

The city council voted unanimously to schedule public hearings for August 21 and September 5 to receive comments on the city's proposed FY2018 Budget.

The city council voted unanimously to table action regarding a public hearing and action item concerning the city's curfew ordinance for minors.

The city council voted unanimously to table action regarding school zone speed limits and parking restrictions during school hours.

During citizen comments, David Pennington asked that the items regarding the curfew ordinance and the school zone speed limits be tabled. Pennington said citizens did not have opportunity to study the ordinance regarding the speed limits and parking, which also included designation of McArthur Drive as a one-way street during school pick-up and drop-off hours from Westward Avenue to Vauthier Street.

Council Member Keith Bell inquired about contact with Texas City Independent School District, which had annexed La Marque's school district following its closure by the state. He favored tabling the item and to collaborate with Texas City ISD. Listen (10:03)

“I think we probably need to have more communication with them, maybe some sort of joint event the we would at least have the opportunity to get to know who they are and what their plans are for our city,” Bell said.

He stated that he was against the item regarding McArthur Drive as the residents in the area were against it.

No executive session was held during the meeting. No other action items were on the agenda. All members were present. Agenda
