Galveston City Council
by John David Suayan
Friday, August 11, 2017

Galveston City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance rescinding the Galveston Park Board of Trustees’ management and control of Ashton Villa and directing the city manager to execute a deed conveying the property to the Galveston Historical Foundation. Listen (7:28)

City Attorney Donald Glywasky said the move is to “cut out the middle man.”

Mayor Jim Yarbrough said the city had a “great” partnership with GHF, expressing hopes Ashton Villa could become a “shining star” among the island’s historical homes.

“(Ashton Villa) is no longer going to be a city-owned asset, but it’s going to be owned by a partner we have confidence in,” said Mayor Yarbrough.

The city council voted unanimously to authorize the city manager to direct the city auditor to assist in the comprehensive review of city assets under the management and control of the Park Board of Trustees and the Board of Trustees of the Galveston Wharves.

The city council voted 5-1,-1, with Frank Maceo opposed and Mayor Pro Tem Terrilyn Tarlton-Shannon abstaining, to extend the Broadway Moratorium.

The city council voted unanimously to deny changing the zoning at 3502 7 1/2 Mile Road from residential, single family to commercial.

The city council voted unanimously to call a public hearing on September 14, 2017 on the FY 2018 proposed budget as required by state law.

  • Rose Tijerina, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board – nominated by Mayor Yarbrough
  • Wayne Brown, Galveston Firefighters Pension Board – nominated by Mayor Yarbrough
