Jefferson County
Jefferson County Commissioners Court
by Garrett Bryce
Monday, August 14, 2017

Jefferson County Commissioners Court today discussed a proposed property tax rate for Tax Year 2017, and plans to propose a tax rate of $0.364977 per $100 valuation, which is the effective tax rate.

An item to propose the rate and set public hearings for September 5 and September 11 was omitted, as the public hearings will not be required to utilize the effective tax rate, which would provide revenues equal to those of the previous year, based on the value of existing properties on the tax rolls. The commissioners court may adopt a tax rate lower than the proposed rate, but may not vote to exceed the proposed rate. The property tax rate for 2016 was $0.365 per $100 valuation. Listen (15:00)

The commissioners court voted unanimously to authorize the offices of Jefferson County Constables for Precincts 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8 to apply for a grant through the Rifle Resistant Body Armor Project, sponsored by the Texas Governor’s Office. There is no matching requirement for the grant.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to authorize the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to apply for the Rifle-Resistant Body Armor Grant.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve the hiring of Jevonne Smith-Pollard as a part time deputy constable with Constable Precinct 2.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve an interlocal agreement with Port Arthur for road repairs, shrubbery and weed control.

All other action items were approved by unanimous vote. All members were present. Agenda
