City of Galveston celebrates opening of public swimming pool
by Ruth Ann Ruiz
Tuesday, August 15, 2017

Lasker Park Community Swimming PoolThe City of Galveston celebrated the opening of its long awaited public swimming pool on Tuesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Jim Yarbrough expressed gratitude to all those who had contributed with financial and moral support. “We came together with true community support,” Yarbrough said.

Several previous attempts at building a public pool had failed, but this time the community was determined to make it happen. Close to sixty public meetings were held just to solicit input from all members of the community in selecting the location for the pool, deciding on 2016 43rd Street. It was given the name of Lasker Park Community Swimming Pool.

Ann Brasier, a life-long swimmer and former beach and pool supervisor, was appointed as chairperson of the committee that made a public pool for Galveston a reality. Larry Brown, president of Ardent Construction, was contracted to build the pool.

The pool will be open for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. Lap swimming will be accessible throughout the year. Swimmers will pay a fee to use the pool. Swimming lessons will be offered. There are local organizations eager to write scholarships for financially needy youngsters who want to learn how to swim.
