Fort Bend County
Sugar Land City Council
by Garrett Bryce
Wednesday, August 16, 2017

Sugar Land City Council on Tuesday voted 6-1, with Amy Mitchell opposed, on a record vote to propose adoption of a tax rate of $0.33007 per $100 valuation for the 2017 Tax Year.

The proposed rate exceeds the effective tax rate of $0.31293 per $100 valuation, which will result in increased revenues for the city based on property values.

Adoption of the tax rate will be considered on September 19. Public hearings will be held on August 22 and September 5 to receive comments regarding the proposed tax rate.

The city council may adopt a tax rate that is lower than the proposed rate, but may not adopt a rate exceeding it.

The city council voted unanimously to place the proposed FY2018 Budget on the September 19 meeting agenda for adoption.

The budget includes a 3 percent merit pay increase for city employees, adjustments to starting public safety salaries to remain competitive in the region, a 4 percent increase to health benefits, and adjustment of the Capital Improvement Program to shift some projects previously proposed for FY2018 to future years.

The city council voted unanimously to authorize Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District No. 128 to issue $17.45 million in bonds.

The city council voted unanimously to award a $68,979 contract to the Center for Public Safety Management, LLC, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the city's police department.

The city council voted unanimously to appoint Council Member Mary Joyce to the Standing Economic Development Committee.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. All members were present. Agenda
