Senator Miles' Statement on Special Session Ending

"The Texas Legislative Special Session ended this week. I was very proud to help pass good legislation regarding maternal mortality out of both chambers.

"Senate Bill 17 will extend and expand the work of the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force. I added an amendment to this bill to address the second leading cause of maternal deaths- drug overdoses, especially those related to the opioid crisis. My amendment will give doctors substance abuse screening tools and resources to better identify at-risk pregnant women. Yesterday, the governor signed this legislation into law.

"Out of the governor's 20 agenda items, many of these failed to pass during the regular session and failed again in the special session. Several were incredibly divisive and would only hurt our state and target the most vulnerable in our communities.

"I am proud of the work my team and I did in the regular and special session. We passed more than 20 bills to benefit Senate District 13 and fought against a contentious agenda. Now, I will be back home in the district to continue fighting and working for the people of SD 13."
