Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 400 Maxey Road

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 400 Maxey Road about 12:55 a.m. on July 7.

The suspect, Edith Abrego (H/f, 29), is charged with murder in the 183rd State District Court for her role in the death of Jody Rodriguez, 7.

A photo of Abrego, courtesy of the Harris County Sheriff's Office, is attached to this news release.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Salazar and Officer B. Roberts reported:

Abrego was driving a white Nissan Rogue southbound at the above address when she failed to maintain a single lane, went into a grassy area, struck a speed limit sign and a light pole.  Her vehicle then went airborne and landed on its driver side in a business parking lot.

One passenger (Jody Rodriguez) was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Two other children, ages 4 and 6, and Abrego were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Further investigation led to charges filed against Abrego and she was taken into custody last Friday (August 18) without incident.
