Galveston College Board of Regents
by Garrett Bryce
Thursday, August 24, 2017

The Galveston College Board of Regents, in a special meeting on Wednesday, voted unanimously to propose a property tax rate of $0.16618 per $100 valuation for the 2017 Tax Year. The 2016 Tax Year rate was $0.17025 per $100 valuation.

The proposed rate does exceed the effective tax rate of $0.160497 per $100 valuation, and will increase revenues for the college's budget compared to FY2017, based on existing properties on the tax rolls. The board will hold public hearings on September 6 and September 13 to receive comment on the proposed rate. Both hearings will be held at 5:30 p.m.

The board may adopt a rate lower than the proposed rate, but may not exceed it.

The proposed rate reflects the sixth consecutive year that the overall tax rate has been reduced.

The board voted unanimously to adopt the college's FY2018 Budget.

The budget includes a 3 percent increase for full-time faculty and staff salaries.

The board voted 5-1, with Caroll Sunseri opposed, to approve a motion to hold Position 7 on the Board of Regents open until the May election. The position is vacant due to the recent death of Regent George Black.

The board's options to fill the vacancy were to hold a special election in November or to appoint a member.

The candidate elected in May will fill the remainder of Black's term, which is four years.

The board voted unanimously to nominate Armin Cantini for election to the Community and Technical College Leadership Council of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Black had served on the position.

No other action items were on the agenda. Regents Carl Kelly and Tino Gonzalez were absent. Agenda
