Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Possession of 20 Kilograms of Cocaine

GALVESTON – The Galveston County Criminal District Attorney announced today that Juan Leonel Gonzalez, 26, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver.

On the night of March 21, 2016, a Galveston Police Department Patrol Officer conducted a traffic stop on a truck that was observed speeding into the city. The driver, who was identified as Gonzalez, began to act very nervous. Suspicious that the vehicle may be concealing illegal items, the officer deployed a K-9 dog on the truck. The dog gave a positive alert, indicating there may be drugs in the truck. The officer conducted a search of the truck and recovered 10 brick-style blocks of cocaine from two separate backpacks and 10 additional blocks of cocaine from a duffle bag in the bed of the truck. The lab report from the U.S. Department of Justice – Drug Enforcement Agency Laboratory confirmed that the blocks contained powder cocaine and had a combined weight of 20.04 kilograms.

Gonzalez had no criminal history or prior involvement with law enforcement. He faced a punishment range of 5 to 99 years, or life, if prison. Today, he accepted the State’s punishment offer, pled guilty, and was sentenced to 40 years in the Institutional Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Gonzalez will have to serve at least one-fourth of his time before being eligible for parole.

Gonzalez was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Matthew Shawhan in the 56th District Court, with Judge Lonnie Cox presiding. The investigation was conducted by the Galveston Police Department.
