Galveston Press Conference on Hurricane Harvey Plans
by Ruth Ann Ruiz
Friday, August 25, 2017

Galveston Mayor and City Council held a press conference on Friday to update media and citizens on the city’s preparation for the approach of Hurricane Harvey to the Texas coast.

Mayor Jim Yarbrough stated that emergency services will be staffed 24/7 and that there is no reason to panic.

It was reported that CenterPoint Energy has personnel on the island ready to address power outages and UTMB’s Hospital and Emergency Center are prepared and open.

Storm surge predictions for Galveston are 4-5 feet. Wind predictions are up to 50 miles an hour. No mandatory evacuations have been issued.

The mayor added that emergency procedures have been worked on since (Hurricane) Ike, and much of the city’s infrastructure has been brought up to Category 5 standards.
