Houston Mayor's News Conference
by Garrett Bryce
Monday, August 28, 2017

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner today held a news conference regarding the response to and recovery from Tropical Storm Harvey.

Turner discussed issues regarding the Barker and Addicks dams, which are being considered for release of water into Buffalo Bayou. The bayou is already at flood stage. He reported that he is in contact with the Harris County Flood Control District to remain informed if water levels along Buffalo Bayou are expected to increase.

Turner stated that the impact of the storm is continuing to change, calling the situation "dynamic." He reported that there are approximately 5,500 people in shelters in Houston currently, but that the number could increase "exponentially" as flooding continues throughout the city.

He also stated that items such as clothing, diapers, formula, food, and medical supplies will be needed for those at the shelters.
