La Porte Fire Department
News Release
Monday, August 28, 2017

Shortly after 4:00pm the La Porte Emergency Communications Center received a call for a pipeline leak just north of the interchange of State Highway 225 and State Highway 146. Upon arrival the La Porte Fire Department confirmed that a line was in fact leaking. The chemical being released was Anhydrous Hydrogen Chloride. Possible symptoms of exposure are eye, throat, and nasal irritation.  The City of La Porte issued a shelter in place for the Northeast section of the city. No injuries are reported and the Harris County Pollution Control was on scene monitoring air quality.

The leak was contained with the assistance of the Harris County Hazardous Material Response Team.

Deer Park Police Department assisted with closing SH 225 East bound at Independence Parkway. Harris County Constable Precinct 8 assisted in closing SH 146 North bound at Main Street in La Porte. Baytown Police Department closed the South bound side of the Fred Hartman Bridge.

The leak was contained, the shelter in place was lifted, and all roadways were opened just after 7:00pm. The company responsible for the line and the cause of the leak is being investigated and will be determined at a later date.
