MD Anderson Cancer Center
Statement by Karen Lu, Senior Vice President and CMO
Wednesday, August 30, 2017

A statement from MD Anderson’s Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer ad interim Karen Lu, M.D.:

MD Anderson Cancer Center is closed for outpatient services through Friday, Sept. 1. Our patients in the hospital continue to be safe and well cared for.

Now that recovery has begun, ambulatory care teams are identifying those patients with the most urgent medical or treatment needs and directly contacting them. As we return to normal operations, we are contacting patients to reschedule appointments that have been cancelled.

Patients concerned about a delay in care should contact their care team to understand necessary next steps. Together with their care provider, decisions will be made about how quickly an appointment can be scheduled or if they should be treated locally for the time being.

I want to commend everyone at MD Anderson for their extraordinary team effort to ensure the health and wellbeing of our patients and their families. We have a long road ahead of us, and I’m so proud of our collective commitment to serve our patients and each other.
