Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner Harvey Press Conference
by John David Suayan
Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner today held a press conference pertaining to Hurricane Harvey’s impact on the city.

Mayor Turner spoke about the midnight to 5 a.m. curfew which went into effect this morning, stating that it was effective.

“I don’t believe any citations were issued,” said the mayor. “People were very cooperative last night.”

He added the curfew will remain in effect until further notice.

Chief of Police Art Acevedo said no arrests were made for curfew violations.

Mayor Turner said City Hall and its annex took in water, but the city will return to normal operations on September 5.

The George R. Brown Convention Center, which is one of the city’s designated shelters, also served as the venue for the city council’s August 30 regular meeting.

“On Tuesday, we should be fully operational,” he said. “All city employees are due back on Tuesday.”

Robert Jackson of Houston First Corporation reported that facilities in the Theater District sustained significant flood damage.

“We haven’t been able to ascertain the exact extent of the damage yet because it’s not safe,” said Jackson.

Acevedo said the police have located 27 out of 47 reported missing persons.

“We have 20 that we’re still looking for,” said the chief.

Mayor Turner called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to begin assisting citizens affected by the storm.
