Houston’s Mayor Announces the Return of Limited Domestic Airline Service to the City’s Major Airports Following Hurricane Harvey

HOUSTON -- Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner today announced that George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport will resume limited domestic passenger airline service. Service at Bush Airport will begin after 4 p.m. today in a phased approach, with international service to be added in the coming days. Service at Hobby Airport will resume this Saturday.

The priority will be to provide service for those passengers who were ticketed prior to the Hurricane Harvey.  So, full service at ticket counters will not be available immediately.

Houston’s major carriers emphasize that it could take more than a week to restore the full schedule of flights at the city’s two major airports.

“We have heard from many fellow Houstonians who are anxious to return home, to assess their circumstances following the storm and to join our recovery efforts,” said Mayor Turner.  “Our airports continue to provide a critical link to humanitarian efforts, to the military and to a world willing to support the tough task of getting back to normal.

Bush, Hobby and Ellington airports have all remained open for humanitarian, recovery and military flights throughout the duration of emergency operations for Hurricane Harvey.

Passenger service at the two major airports was disrupted by flooding due to Hurricane Harvey that prevented passengers, crews and ground service personnel from reaching the airports.  Mobility has improved significantly in the past 24 hours.
