GALVESTON RESUMES TRANSIT OPERATIONS, BEGINS DAMAGE ASSESSMENT
AND DEBRIS PICK UP

Galveston, Texas – Hurricane Harvey’s impacts were felt up and down the Gulf Coast and our hearts go out to our neighbors in every direction. While Galveston fared very well in comparison to our neighboring communities, we do have residents and businesses who did not escape Harvey's wrath.  As we begin the recovery phase, we will have numerous updates for our citizens in the coming days.

ISLAND TRANSIT

Island Transit has announced that they will resume their fixed route and demand response operations on Thursday August 31st, 2017. The League City Victory Lakes Park & Ride service will resume as well on Friday September 1st, 2017. Trolley service has been suspended until further notice. You can view more information about the transportation system on the island by visiting www.galvestontx.gov/islandtransit.

DEBRIS PLACEMENT & PICKUP

While we begin the process of cleaning up from Harvey's record-breaking rainfall, please keep in mind where you place your debris. Crews are out cleaning up debris and have noticed that residents who have begun cleaning up are placing debris in the roadway. Should we get more rain, this could block our storm drains that drained very well during Harvey. Please place all debris above the curb.

This week we are running one day later than your normal scheduled day. We will also revisit the areas west of 103rd on Friday and the areas east of 103rd on Saturday and Sunday. Beginning next week trash and debris will be picked up on your regularly scheduled trash day.

LASKER PARK COMMUNITY POOL

The Lasker Park Community Pool will be closed until further notice. We are currently working to assess staffing availability and performing needed maintenance after the storm.

PARKING FEES HAVE BEEN WAIVED DOWNTOWN

The City has waived all parking fees until September 14th, 2017. City Council will make a decision on extending the time period for free parking downtown at the September 14th, 2017 City Council meeting.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT TEAMS

The City has deployed damage assessment teams throughout the island to survey the impacts of Hurricane Harvey to Galveston. These teams are currently working to notate all areas affected. In the coming days, they will be speaking with property owners directly to assess damage to their property. City employees will always have photo identification on them. All employees will have visible identification. If you ever have a concern that someone is falsely representing themselves as a City employee, you can contact the Galveston Police Department at our non-emergency number 409-765-3702.

CODE ENFORCEMENT

The City has reassigned code enforcement officers to assist in damage assessment. During this time, we will be addressing code enforcement cases on as they arise and prioritizing them based on severity. Residents can still report any code enforcement complaints online or by phone.

ON OUR WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA

If your property was impacted by the storm, we have placed a wealth of information on our website at www.galvestontx.gov/harvey. The City will utilize this page to centralize all of the information that you need to begin the process of recovery if you were impacted. We are also placing information on the City’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
