Galveston City Council, in a special meeting held today, voted unanimously to extend the state of disaster and emergency declaration in the city because of the impact of Hurricane Harvey.

Mayor Jim Yarbrough explained that the item ratifies a declaration of local disaster he issued on August 24, as well as authorizes the extension of a series of orders until September 14.

Harvey made landfall near Corpus Christi as a Category 4 storm on the night of August 25.

These orders are as follows:

  • Remove the requirements of competitive bid.
  • Waive parking enforcement.
  • Waive building permit fees.
  • Lift the Broadway Moratorium.

Earlier in the meeting, Mayor Yarbrough and City Manager Brian Maxwell provided an update on the city’s status.

“The island sustained damage, but certainly nothing compared to our neighbors to the north,” said the mayor.

He thanked and congratulated city employees and first responders for their work.

Maxwell talked about the city’s operational activities post-Harvey. He said the city will collect storm debris throughout the weekend and Island Transit is coordinating with local businesses.

Fire Chief Mike Wisko reported that the medical examiner confirmed four Harvey-related fatalities in the county, none of which occurred in Galveston.

The city council will not hold its September 1 special meeting, per Yarbrough.
