GALVESTON CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO WAIVE PERMIT FEES TO EXPEDITE RECOVERY FOR IMPACTED BUSINESSES AND HOMES

Galveston, Texas – While the City of Galveston was spared the damage that we see on the mainland and all along the coast, City Council unanimously passed emergency orders to expedite recovery for our Galveston businesses and homes that were impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

To promote the rapid issuance of building permits to begin repairs of structures damaged by Hurricane Harvey, City Council voted to waive all permit application fees effective August 31, 2017.

“We are blessed, there simply isn’t any other way to put it,” said Galveston’s Mayor James D Yarbrough. “However, we do have businesses and homes that have begun the process of cleaning up Harvey’s mess. It is our duty, as a City, to ensure that we do everything we can to expedite their recovery.”

City Council also voted to give this same right to those businesses on Broadway impacted by the storm by lifting the moratorium previously imposed, only for storm related repairs.

They also voted to suspend paid parking enforcement which could hinder the preservation, repair and/or rehabilitation of property.

These emergency orders will remain in effect until City Council meets again on September 14th. At that point, City Council can reassess the state of the City and determine if these measures remain necessary.
