Galveston Park Board Update: September 1, 2017

The Galveston Park Board of Trustees held a special meeting 4 p.m. Thursday, August 31 at Park Board Plaza. Below is an update of news from the boardroom.

Park Board Proposes $32 million Operating Budget

The Park Board will present its proposed 2017-2018 operating budget at a public workshop at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Blvd. Community members are invited to attend. The Park Board reviewed the proposed $32 million budget at its meeting Tuesday. The budget represents a 20% increase over the 2016-2017 budget in part because of federal grants earmarked for beach nourishment the Park Board is slated to receive next year. If there are no changes to the proposed budget at the public workshop, it is expected to be approved by the board at a meeting Sept. 12.

The Park Board manages various funds, including tourism development, beach cleaning, beach patrol, debt service, grants, beach nourishment, sand replenishment and general administration. The organization is funded in part by state hotel occupancy tax revenue and beach user fees. Additional funding comes from various grants and reimbursements. The organization receives no property or sales taxes from the City of Galveston.

Park Board Will Suspend Parking Fees at Beach Parks During Holiday Weekend

At its meeting Tuesday, the Park Board voted to suspend the collection of parking fees at Stewart Beach and Dellanera RV Park during Labor Day Weekend. Both parks will be open during the holiday weekend. The move comes as the City of Galveston suspends paid parking enforcement along the seawall and in the downtown area in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and is meant to show goodwill to visitors to the island.
