Galveston County Animal Resource Center Working to Reunite Harvey Pets with Owners

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – The Galveston County Animal Resource Center (ARC) continues working to reunite people with more than 80 pets that entered the shelter during the Harvey flooding emergency.

Fees Waived

Pets brought to the shelter between August 25 and September 2 will have impound and boarding fees waived if the animal is redeemed within 14 days of entering the facility.

"Making the transition home as prompt and smooth as possible is important to us," said Amber Adams, ARC director. "We have no interest in causing any additional financial burden on Harvey victims and want nothing more than to see these pets reunited with their families.”

Stray Hold Extended

The ARC is extending the stray hold period to at least two weeks for pets that entered the shelter between August 25 and September 2. Animal shelters typically put pets up for adoption after three days.

“We understand it may take more time for pet owners who evacuated to make it back home,” Adams continued. “Extending the stray hold period is an effort to make sure we reunite as many as possible.”

Extended Days for Walkthroughs

To allow people to look for and redeem pets lost during the flooding emergency, the ARC will be open for walkthroughs on Sunday, September 3 and Monday, September 4 from noon to 4 p.m.

Although animal care and field services are continuous, Sundays and Mondays are usually administrative days. The ARC’s normal public hours of operation are:

·         Tuesdays: Noon - 6 p.m.

·         Wednesdays: Noon - 5 p.m.

·         Thursdays: Noon - 6 p.m.

·         Fridays: Noon - 5 p.m.

·         Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Any additional changes to hours of operation related to the folding emergency will be posted online at and

Pre-Harvey Pets Transferred

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) transferred 119 pre-Harvey pets from the ARC to other regions of the state on September 1 and 2. This allows ARC staff to properly house Harvey pets and make space available for more pets to enter the shelter.

“We are so thankful to the ASPCA for their amazing efforts and generosity,” Adams continued. “We want to emphasize the pets the society took were in our shelter before the storm and flooding."

Finding Lost Pets

Like all pets that enter the ARC, Harvey pets are posted online at In addition, pictures of Harvey pets are being posted at

The ARC serves Bayou Vista, Hitchcock, Kemah, La Marque, Texas City, Tiki Island and unincorporated Galveston County. Pets from other cities may be at the following shelters:

·         Bayou Animal Services (Dickinson, Santa Fe, Clear Lake Shores): 281-337-3117

·         Friendswood Animal Control: 281-996-3391

·         Galveston Island Humane Society: 409-740-1919

·         League City Pets Alive: 281-554-1377

“We urge people looking for their pets to check the Pet Harbor website because we and many other area shelters post pets there,” Adams said. “It's also very important to make frequent visits to local shelters to walk through and search for your pets in person."

Community Support

The ARC has received many donations and volunteers during this emergency. If you want to donate items to the ARC, laundry detergent and cat litter are the top requests. Donations may be dropped off at the shelter. These donations will be shared with others in need, as the ARC is serving as a distribution center. Please remember the other shelters in the county may need help as well,” Adams continued.

The ARC is located at 3412 25th Ave N. (Loop 197 N) in Texas City and can be reached at 409-948-2485 or
