Tuesday, September 05, 2017

Galveston County Commissioners Court, in a special meeting held today, voted 4-1, with Darrell Apffel opposed, to adopt the FY2018 county budget.

Chief Financial Officer David M. Delac explained that the budget will reduce the ad valorem tax rate below the effective for a seventh consecutive year.

“The proposed ad valorem tax rate will stay the same as the previous year’s tax rate of 0.552,” said Delac.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to adopt the 2017 tax levy.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to rename the West County Building after former Commissioner Eddie Janek.

Janek addressed the court, stating he never thought he would have a structure named after him when he first arrived in the county by train almost 80 years ago.

“It’s really a great honor, and I like to thank the commissioners court for doing this for me,” he said.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding with TEXSAR, Inc. relating to search and rescue operations.

The commissioners court voted unanimously to approve the release of claims in the lawsuit styled Williams v. County of Galveston. The item was discussed in executive session.

An item allocating 62 square feet of office space on the third floor of the Galveston County Justice Center Court Building to information technology for managerial space was pulled from the agenda and not considered for action by the commissioners court.

All other agenda items were approved unanimously with all members present. Special Meeting Agenda
