Fort Bend County
Sugar Land City Council
by Garrett Bryce
Wednesday, September 06, 2017

Sugar Land City Council on Tuesday voted 5-0-1, with Bridget Yeung abstaining, to approve, on first reading, an ordinance repealing the city’s prior ordinance regarding the use of portable electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle.

The city council had adopted the ordinance, aimed at reducing distracted driving, in February. The ordinance prohibited using mobile handheld devices while driving, with the exception of making an emergency call.

The ordinance is being repealed following the implementation of House Bill 62, a law preventing texting while driving.

The city council voted unanimously to approve an interlocal agreement with the Brazos River Authority for the second phase of the Lower Brazos River Flood Protection Plan Study, and authorizing matching funds in an amount not to exceed $30,000 for the local participation share of the total study costs.

The city council voted unanimously to award a $1,744,060 contract to LDF Construction for the construction of the Airport Maintenance Building.

The city council voted unanimously to approve a groundwater reduction plan participation agreement with First Colony Property Owners’ Association, Inc.

The city council voted unanimously to approve a groundwater reduction plan participation agreement with Sugar Land Business Park Association, Inc.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. Council Member Amy Mitchell was absent. Agenda
