Galveston College 2017-18 Lecture Series Begins October 10

Galveston College’s 2017-2018 Lecture Series “The Brain” offers its first lecture on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing on the Galveston College main campus. The topic for the first lecture is “Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias: Update On Prevention and Treatments. The lecture is being presented by Dr. Mukaila Raji, M.D., M.S., FACP, Professor and Director of Internal Medicine-Geriatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston.

Dr. Mukaila Raji is Professor and Director, Division of Geriatrics in the Department of Internal Medicine and Senior Fellow in the Sealy Center on Aging at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He holds the Edgar Gnitzinger Distinguished Professorship in Aging and directs the UTMB Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Raji received his medical degree from the University of Ife in Nigeria. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, USA, a geriatric fellowship at Duke University in Durham, NC, USA and a Master of Science Degree in pharmacology at the University of Alberta in Canada. Dr. Raji is board certified in both geriatrics and internal medicine. He has been at UTMB since 1999.

Dr. Raji has published over 85 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters in the areas of dementia, health policy, and geriatric pharmacology. His research is funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. Raji is a recipient of the Sir William Osler Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award, the Geriatric Academic Career Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the America’s 2017 Top Doctor in Geriatric Medicine Award, and the 2017 Top Texas Physician Honor.

Galveston College has offered its annual lecture series for the general public, students, faculty, and staff for over 25 years. Topics have included the history of baseball, African studies, environmental protection, Galveston Bay, criminal justice, U.S. Presidents, Arab cultures, science, health issues, American explorers and others.
