TxDOT AND HCTRA WORK TOGETHER TO RESTORE WEST HOUSTON MOBILITY

HOUSTON – Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) are mobilizing resources to reduce the standing water on Sam Houston Tollway/Beltway 8. As of today, water levels have receded enough to begin pumping water from the mainlanes of the West Sam Houston Tollway between I-10 and Westheimer to get the water flowing into Buffalo Bayou. Crews will be using multiple pumps to move the water from the mainlanes to Buffalo Bayou via the Beltway 8 northbound frontage road. This activity will be monitored to insure that there are no adverse impacts to water levels in
the adjacent area.

The objective is to reduce water levels enough to begin structural inspections to determine the sufficiency of the pavement and retaining walls in preparation to restore traffic. It is important to note that this the beginning of the restoration process to assess potential damage and schedule any necessary repairs. The roadway will only be opened after the water has completely receded and all structures and pavement have been deemed safe and ready for travel.

The teams are scheduled to be onsite to initiate this process at 2:30 pm today. Media interested in onsite interviews will be allowed access between 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm. Please contact Roxy Sibrian (HCTRA) at 832-771-2819 or Karen Othon (TxDOT) at 281-686-8616.
