Remembering Jim Guidry Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership
Galveston County
Galveston County Judge Mark Henry
News Conference
Friday, September 08, 2017

Galveston County Judge Mark Henry today participated in a Facebook Live discussion regarding the county's recovery from Hurricane Harvey.

The discussion was moderated by Sam Malone, who spoke with Henry regarding the impact of the storm. According to Henry, Hurricane Harve caused either wind or flood damage to 19,000 homes, affecting approximately 60,000 residents. He noted that communities in Friendswood, League City, and particularly Dickinson were the hardest hit.

Henry noted that debris removal in cities mostly began on Wednesday, and that the county would support them where possible.

County officials have noted that the county continues to work through the federal process to begin debris removal in unincorporated areas. A schedule for debris removal in those areas will be posted on the county's Facebook page once available.

Henry asked those in areas where debris removal is underway to leave room on the street for garbage trucks to allow them to collect debris.

Henry noted that the county is examining utilization of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's “Step” program, which would allow homes with more minor flooding damage to conduct temporary repairs.

“Galveston County is perfectly situated for this program,” Henry said. Listen (20:03)

The program would allow residents to move back into their homes while other rebuilding efforts take place.

“It gets you back in your home,” he said.

Henry noted concerns scams in the area, concluded his statements that the county would work with the District Attorney's Office to prosecute anyone found attempting to conduct scams on flood victims.
