Thank you, Galveston, for your support of Sea Star Base Galveston
by Rosemary Doolin, Sea Star Base Galveston
Tuesday, September 12, 2017

When Charles and I bought our home on Galveston Island, we knew that this was the right location for our dream to become a reality. As a former Sea Scout leader and avid sailor, Charles has been committed to youth sailing programs since his teens. It wasn’t long after we met that I jumped on board to become a Sea Scout leader and our passion for sailing was co-joined. Charles’ vision became our vision, and in 2010, after Hurricane Ike, Sea Star Base Galveston was born. Offatt’s Bayou is the perfect location for the state of the art LEED Platinum building, and marine facility, complete with 3 levels of dormitory housing, swimming pool, volleyball courts, floating docks, meeting and event facilities, classrooms, Chapel/amphitheater, and outdoor pavilions. We chose to invest on the Island because we feel the future of Galveston, as well as our vision, is secure here.

We have been so fortunate to have the support of the Galveston community which has enabled the programs at SSBG to now be open to the community at large. Our success is due to the collaborations and working relationships established with Seas Scouts, Boy Scouts of America, Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, Texas A& M Galveston, Galveston Independent School District, Odyssey Academy, U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas National Guard, and numerous others whom the Base serves for educational and training purposes. We welcome school field trips, corporate retreats and events, and encourage educators and meeting planners to contact our staff to schedule a site tour.

The mission of Sea Star Base Galveston is to be a high-adventure aquatic destination offering marine and maritime education programs that foster teamwork, skills, lifetime leadership, and independence in body, mind, and spirit. Our vision is to offer young people the opportunity to experience sailing and by doing so to benefit from the lessons that will carry with them a lifetime. Not just for kids, our programs are open to adults of all ages and military veterans. We are very proud of our award winning adaptive programs that make sailing a reality for those who would not otherwise have the experience. The staff at SSBG is second to none and we greatly appreciate their skills and dedication to the success of our programs.

It has been a journey and we are very proud of our success. Charles and I thank you, Galveston, for your support along the way, and we invite you to share our passion by visiting Sea Star Base Galveston, take a tour, register for a program, or become a member and enjoy year round benefits. We could not have done it without you.
