Equipment Failure at the City of Galveston’s Main Wastewater Treatment Plant Causes Release of 135,000 Gallons of Partially Treated Aerated Sludge Into Galveston Bay

Galveston, TX –– At approximately 10:15am this morning, the City of Galveston Main Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 5200 Port Industrial Road experienced a release of 135,000 gallons of partially treated aerated sludge into Galveston Bay.  The release was caused by an equipment failure and the City has removed the unit where the failure occurred from operations.  In addition, the City is in discussions with the manufacturer to address the cause of the failure as well as steps needed to restart the unit.

The City will be sending bay water samples to Eastex laboratories for testing.  At this time, there have not been any adverse impacts to aquatic life noted at or near the location of the release. Then City will continue to monitor the bay closely and sample and test as needed.  All appropriate state and federal government agencies have been notified.  The release has no impact on the City’s drinking water supply and it remains safe for residents to drink.  The public should avoid contact with waste material, soil, or water in the area potentially affected by the spill.  If anyone comes into contact with the waste material, soil, or water potentially affected by the spill, they should bathe and wash clothes thoroughly as soon as possible.  Fishing in the area affected by the spill is strongly discouraged.

For questions or concerns residents can call the City Public Information Office at 409-797-3546.
