College Hosts Culinary Speaker October 5

Galveston College will begin their Coastal Culinary Speakers Series on Thursday October 5, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Abe and Annie Seibel Foundation Wing on the main campus of Galveston College. The general public is invited to attend. This is the Kick-off event for the National Endowment for the Humanities Food Studies Grant received by the College in the amount of $99,429 last December.

The event will feature as speaker Robb Walsh, a three time James Beard Journalism Award winner, the author of a dozen books about food, and a partner in El Real Tex – Mex Café’ in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood. He is co-founder of Galveston Eats, a non-profit dedicated to preserving Galveston food culture. Walsh co-founded Foodways Texas , a non- profit dedicated to preserving Texas food history headquartered at University of Texas –Austin.

The Coastal Culinary project, that includes a speakers series, brings together a group of 12 faculty, 2 project leaders and 40 students to study scholarly work in food studies, food pathways, and the use of personal narratives informed by family recipes and story-telling based on food. Dr. David Shane Wallace and Michael Berberich are co-directors of this NEH project.
