City Asking Residents & Businesses to Voluntarily Conserve Water
on Monday, September 25th

Galveston, Texas – September 22nd, 2017 – On Monday, September 25th, the City will be unable to receive water from the Gulf Coast Water Authority for a period of 12 hours. The City’s water comes to the Island from the Thomas Mackey Water Treatment Plant, which will undergo maintenance that will begin at 8:00 a.m. and is expected to be completed no later than 8:00 p.m.   During this period, the City is asking residents to voluntarily conserve water and limit activities that are taxing on the City’s water supply.

For the month of September, the City typically uses approximately 15 million gallons of water per day. The City has ground storage tanks that holds approximately 21 million gallons of water, that are used for situations like this.  While we do not anticipate any interruptions to service, we are asking that residents and business owners voluntarily conserve water during those hours.

Ways You Can Help

Conserving water involves simple practices that each of us can implement within our own homes and businesses such as:

  • Turning the faucets off when you are brushing your teeth
  • Taking shorter showers
  • Using less water for outdoor activities
  • Remember that every drop counts

While we are encouraging voluntary conservation specifically on this date, conservation is an effort that we can all make daily to protect our water supply and our wallets. The City has a wealth of tips and information that will guide conservation efforts on our website at
