Rice story map presents estimated damage from Hurricane Harvey

HOUSTON – Drawing from numerous data sources, researchers at Rice University's Kinder Institute for Urban Research have conducted analyses and created an interactive story map to present the estimated damages caused by Hurricane Harvey. 

The story map provides the community with Harvey-related data, including estimated economic cost of the storm; rainfall estimates; most-affected neighborhoods; location, age and building type of likely affected homes; demographic characteristics of the affected population; and information on affected schools.

“The Kinder Institute received many requests from organizations and communities for Harvey-related data, so we decided to create this tool to better inform the general public of the preliminary damage assessment," said Jie Wu, director of research management for the Kinder Institute. “There will be more analysis once we get the actual flood claim data, and we will update the page with useful data and mapping resources to assist in long-term recovery planning efforts.”
