Mayor Turner to join 9th Annual Disability Unity & Pride Celebration Festivities this Saturday

HOUSTON - Formerly known as the Disability Awareness Month Kick Off, the Disability Unity and Pride Celebration is a gathering of empowerment, advocacy, solidarity and fellowship.   Brought to you by the City of Houston Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, this year’s theme, Our Moment in Time: Learning from the past.  Looking to the future, brings the wisdom of older advocates and the hopes and dreams of the younger generation together as we celebrate the power and diversity of our Houston disability community.

The Disability Pride and Unity Celebration will feature exhibitors, performances from artists with disabilities, a panel discussion, remarks from Mayor Sylvester Turner and Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities Director Maria Town, and a poetry reading.  The event is family-friendly and will include events for children.   Special Guest ABC 13 News Anchor Melanie Lawson will be the Mistress of Ceremonies.

The mission of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is to serve as the primary advocate for the rights and needs of citizens with disabilities. The Office also serves as a liaison between the mayor, city council, city departments and other public and private entities on matters pertaining to people with disabilities in Houston. MOPD's vision is a city where everyone understands the importance of equal participation and full inclusion of all citizens, including citizens with disabilities.

Event is scheduled to take place this Saturday, September 30th from 9:00AM to 1PM at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center 1475 West Gray Houston, Texas 77019. Exhibitors from 9 am to 11:00 am. The speaking program begins at 11:00 am.
