COM to offer assistance fair for Hurricane Harvey answers

(Texas City, TX)— The flood waters from Hurricane Harvey flooding have receded, but for many area residents, questions remain about what recovery assistance is available or how to navigate the applications and appeals processes.  College of the Mainland is helping connect students, employees, and the whole community with answers.  COM is hosting two “assistance fairs” Tuesday, Oct. 10 in Room 131 of the Learning Resource Center on campus – one is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and the other is from 6 to 8 p.m.

“We’re so far removed from the hurricane itself that we’re getting second- and third-wave issues. If people needed help, they’ve probably asked for it by now, but they may still feel really lost in the system.  The agencies at this event can help with that,” said Patricia McIntosh, College of the Mainland emergency management coordinator.

Each event will have representatives from federal and local governmental and nonprofit assistance providers who can address specific questions.

The earlier session will emphasize concerns most pertinent to college students. The later session will be more comprehensive with Disaster Survivor Assistance Team representatives present.

You can also get information to help you through the appeal process if you have applied for benefits and they have been denied or only partially approved.

“It’s not just for people who haven’t asked for help yet,” McIntosh said. “If you are still not whole, it’s a good time to come get some more information.”
